Preparator and Facilities Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:
Arthouse at the Jones Center seeks an experienced, organized and responsible individual to manage the physical preparation of exhibitions as well as general building maintenance. Reporting to the Executive Director and Associate Director/Curator and working closely with visiting artists, the Curatorial Assistant/Exhibitions Coordinator and other staff, he/she oversees the installation of an ambitious and often challenging exhibitions program that includes curated and commissioned projects in all media. In addition to preparing galleries and installing artwork, he/she is responsible for packing, crating, and transporting artwork and hiring and managing temporary labor, outside vendors and contractors as needed. The construction of exhibition furniture is also required. He/she is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the facility to ensure that operations and maintenance meet the needs of staff and visitors as well as institutional standards. The Preparator and Facilities Manager also manages offsite storage and associated leases and maintains appropriate budgets, files and records related to exhibition preparation and facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in art related field and 5 years of art handling, fabrication, and installation experience in a museum or gallery setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Facilities and project management experience.
  • Knowledge of current museum professional standards and best practices, including occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Experience with packing and crating methods, and installation and maintenance of all types of art, including new media.
  • Strong technical skills in basic construction, fabrication and installation methods; knowledge of proper use and care of power and manual tools, lifts, and other pertinent equipment.
  • Knowledge and experience with video and audio equipment, computers, and lighting systems.
  • Ability to work efficiently and accurately, and to be responsive to an often-challenging production environment; ability to work effectively on simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to organize time, set priorities and perform effectively under deadline.
  • Ability to hire and supervise temporary labor for assistance in large installations. Experience supervising the work of others to ensure completion and quality of delegated work.
  • Demonstrated managerial, supervisory, and communication experience.
  • Experience working with outside vendors, contractors, architects, etc.
  • Valid Texas state driver’s license.
